Family: Husband, John, and daughter, Mary Claire (11 years old) Years in the Golden Isles: I’ve lived on St. Simons permanently since 1987. My parents led our family (I’m the fourth of five children; a lot of people don’t know that) to St. Simons as part-time residents, beginning in 1970-1971. My father had work here in the design industry. School: Glynn Academy, Armstrong State College and Brenau Women’s College Occupation: Owner at The Home Fabric Studio and designer dba: Gina D’Amico Interiors Who or what inspired you to be become a designer: I love what I do, and I’m very blessed to be able to work in an industry with endless creative outlets! My inspiration for design comes from growing up in the design industry and learning to appreciate all beautiful surroundings and things in life! Design has many layers … learning to incorporate those through antiques, family heirlooms, color and texture makes for a warm and loving space! Tell us about The Home Fabric Studio and its mission: I’ve been in the design and retail industry since graduating from college. But, I put full-time work aside in 2008 to raise my daughter. During that time, I did some consulting/design work part-time, out of the house. I had many customers, clients and friends asking where they could buy fabric. I would get the same question all the time … “I just need to recover my sofa.” “My mom gave me this old chair.” Or, “I found this item at a garage sale or consignment shop.” ”Where can I buy fabric?” So, I quickly realized there was a need for a fabric store. The Home Fabric Studio was opened four and a half years ago. It’s for anyone to browse the showroom and purchase what they need. To my excitement, it has grown and I now offer trim, wallpaper, custom design and more! What are a few quintessential coastal colors and fabric/textile lines you love? I really can’t pinpoint a particular coastal color I like. To be honest … I love mixing and matching all colors, styles and designs. If I had to choose, probably corals and greens and blues and whites. My design reflects a “lived in” and “comfortable” look and feel. I like layering items, old and new, with natural woods and textures. My favorite fabric line is F Schumacher & Co. I have an extensive amount of samples in the studio, all classic with a few new trendy designs thrown in. I love natural looking elements, so grasscloth is a favorite wall covering. Favorite landmark in the Golden Isles: I grew up on the beaches, grounds and hallways of the King & Prince Hotel. My dad was hired in 1970-1971 for the complete and original renovation and design of the hotel. I hold many memories there with my siblings, running around, in and out of the buildings. We knew all the best hiding spots, the vending machine that would kick out a free Coca-Cola once in a while, cooks in the kitchen handing us biscuits, sitting on the green wooden swings, and lots of evening swims in the round pool! Although it has changed tremendously over the decades, the King & Prince is my favorite local historical landmark!
A local you admire: This is a tough question … so many mentors in my life. But I would have to say my parents. They taught me the value of hard work, dedication to a job and perseverance. I am an entrepreneur at heart, and because my parents not only modeled good work ethic and valued customer service, they also taught me to go after my dreams. So, I have to say I love what I do and am honored to have learned it from the best role models, my parents. Local causes you like to support: Being that my husband and I both from here, we support several local causes. To me, I like to support the arts, humane society, church and school-related events. We have two rescue dogs and adopting from HSSCG has been the most rewarding and loving choice we made! Describe a perfect Saturday for you in the Golden Isles: Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love being on the water! It’s my way to wind down after a hectic week and enjoy our beautiful coastal rivers, marshes and sunsets! Being on our boat is by far a perfect Saturday for me! Cruising around Fort Frederica, anchoring on Little Saint Simons or Jekyll, beach combing for shells and soaking in the sun … that’s my perfect day!
