Name: Hans F. Trupp
Family: I have three great children and four fantastic grandchildren who are living in Augusta, Ga., Vancouver, British Columbia, and Columbia, S.C.
Years in the Golden Isles: I grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to St. Simons in 1968.
School: I attended Clemson University on a swimming scholarship and graduated with a degree in industrial management.
Occupation: Founder and chairman at Trupp Hodnett Enterprises and The Management Co., which I took public (RZT NYSE) in 1998. I have recently re-entered the real estate business locally through an affiliation with EXP Realty.
Describe the perfect Saturday spent in the Golden Isles: Walking the beach and enjoying being in the most beautiful place in the world.
Tell us about your career: Upon graduation, I entered the U. S. Navy and spent eight years as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War flying over 200 combat missions in the F48 Phantom Jet off the aircraft carriers USS Ranger and USS Constellation. I was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross, 12 Air medals, two Navy Commendation medals, two Navy Achievement medals and the South Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. I spent my last two years in the Navy at the Glynco Naval Air Station as a basic jet navigation instructor. It was during this time that I fell in love with the area and decided to make it my home. Upon leaving the Navy in 1970, I purchased a small property and casualty insurance agency on St. Simons Island, which became Trupp McGinty Insurance Services. After 19 years of growth, along with my partner Fred McGinty, we merged with a publicly traded insurance agency.
What is some of the best advice you have received over the years? Knowledge is power and the harder you work the luckier you get.
Give us your elevator pitch for someone looking to move to the Golden Isles: This is a real community as opposed to being a resort town. It is close enough to two major cities for access to any events someone would like to participate in.
What are some of your favorite spots around the Golden Isles? The best restaurant on St. Simons Island is without a doubt Barbara Jean’s. They have great healthy food, great service and are located in the middle of the village. I also enjoy being five minutes from the beach, five minutes from the airport, five minutes from my office, five minutes from the golf course, and not spending half of my life driving around.
