With beaches open, it seemed like a great time to make some fun recommendations for what to pack in your beach bag. We spoke with Wilmot Greene and Tori Stevens creators of Sammies, in Redfern Village. Wilmot, the former owner of the Georgia Theatre, in Athens, and Tori, are well-versed in all things music, and make some great suggestions for your beach listening pleasure, but they don’t stop there. These two also have great ideas for books, cocktails and what to eat – Sammies, of course. A few offerings from friends for what to pack for a day in the sun, and as a result, we have come up with the definitive list – from flip flops to shades, and everything in between – of the things that make a beach visit extraordinary.

What they’re listening to: Playlists

Yacht Rock Essentials on Apple Music. Yacht rock is, of course, perfect for the beach. There are a couple sleepers on this playlist, but for a curated list, it’s pretty dang smooth.

Brazileiros by Wkmioh on Spotify (http://bit.ly/Brazileiros) is all Brazilian tunes with great beach rhythms. It’s a nice long playl ist of groovy and salty stuff you’ve probably never heard before. We listen to it a lot in the shop. It’s good, high-energy music, but not too aggressive or loud.

Favorite Albums

New stuff:

The Universe Smiles Upon You — Khruangbin.

Quiet groovy Thai surf music.

Coming Home — Leon Bridges.

Sounds like Motown but it’s new.

Skinshape — Skinshape.

Downtempo electronic background tunes.

Changes — Neal Francis.

Mellow funk.

Older stuff:

Cornell 77 — Grateful Dead.

The greatest concert ever played!

Sneaking Sally Through the Alley — Robert Palmer.

Such an underrated classic!

Aja — Steely Dan. Steely Dan works great on the beach.

Herb Alpert Presents — Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66.

Samba, samba, samba!!

In general, anything with Michael McDonald.

WHAT THEY'RE READING:

Wil – The Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald like The Quick Red Fox.

Travis is a rough Florida private detective-type guy. He solves crimes on boats in exotic locations.

Tori –Adrift. Both the Steven Callahan novel and the Tami Oldham Ashcraft one. Two different books, similar stories. Both great.

SAMMIES TO EAT:

“A Sammie is a simple sandwich, but not just any sandwich,” said Wil. “We slice meats and cheeses every morning to assemble a fresh, portable, delicious handheld lunch. Our recipe is a time-tested wonder of sandwich science. Soft fresh bread, creamy cheese, southern mayo, a touch of prepared mustard, a healthy pair of crunchy pickle slices, and a generous portion of thinly sliced meat combine to create something more than the sum of its parts.”

“The finished product is wrapped in film to allow the magic chemistry to begin,” he adds. We prepare the Sammies daily just before we open the doors, so that you can get in and out in mere seconds.” Grab and go on the way to the beach at Sammies, in Redfern Village, across from Catch 228.

COCKTAILS TO DRINK:

Wil – The “ojo rojo” (red eye). Pour 3 or 4 ounces of Bloody Mary mix and half a lime over ice, and add 12 ounces of beer.

Tori – Mexican mule. Mix Dr. Brown’s ginger ale (available at Sammies) with tequila and lime!
