Describe your perfect Saturday in the Golden Isles: I love the springtime in the South! Waking before the sun rises, heading to the woods with my son for several hours of turkey hunting. Returning to the island to board the boat for a few more hours of triple tail fishing with my children and relaxing that evening with good friends and family and enjoying our catch on the grill!

Tell us about your favorite things to do in your free time: I grew up enjoying the outdoors. My passions include saltwater fly fishing, bird hunting, collecting unique nature pieces from the ocean shores, and Gyotaku (Japanese method of printing fish art). I love to cook as well!

A local you admire: Unfortunately, most of the locals I truly admire have passed. When I first arrived to St. Simons Island, a group of interesting and successful men befriended me. Having lost my father at an early age, their wisdom was very beneficial in my business and social life. The first name that came to mind was Donald Dutson. A great man with a huge personality! Never a dull moment was experienced with these men known as the “Gangsome.”

How are you spending your time during social distancing? Linda and I just this year experienced being empty nesters until the pandemic. This unique experience has brought our family back together again. I wake at 4 a.m. most mornings and turkey hunt with my son, Aiden. I am home to begin my work by 9 a.m., and then our family enjoys several competitive matches of pickle ball here in our neighborhood each evening. Being with family at this stage of our lives will make great memories for us all!

What is one thing every visitor must do before leaving the area? As President of the Board of Directors for the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, a visit to the St. Simons Island Light House and Keepers Dwelling followed by a tour of the new World War II Home Front Museum is a must! It makes me proud to know our community values the important historical landmarks of our area.

What is your favorite part about being a local? I have been coming to the Golden Isles for 50 years. Most of my fondest memories are from my time on East Beach as a child. My love of the sea made SSI an ideal place to raise my family. The fact that everyone knows one another, we have wonderful places to dine, unlimited activities and community that values culture!
