The 2021 edition of the American Cancer Society Victory Gala put on a different face this year. Instead of a traditional late-night black-tie optional event, Rainbow Island, on Sea Island, was the venue for “Shuck Cancer,” an early evening oyster roast where casual attire was the order of the day.

In addition to the delicious oysters, Sea Island hosted a buffet dinner of their famous fried chicken, collard greens, squash casserole, salad and rolls.

Guests grooved to the sounds of Mason Waters and the Groove AllStars, and Mason Waters was also the auctioneer for the live auction segment of the evening.

What is now known as the ACS Victory Gala was established as a ladies’ fashion show and luncheon in 1969 by the late Harriet Gilbert, and held annually at The Cloister.
